Salak/ Snake fruit plant

The fruits grow in clusters at the base of the palm, and are also known as snake fruit or snakeskin fruit due to the reddish-brown scaly skin. Salak, a Southeast Asian fruit known as Snake Skin fruit, is famous for its unique appearance and flavour profile, with varieties like Salak Bali, Salak Pondoh, and Salak Bali Merah, rich in vitamin C, potassium, and fibre.

At first glance, Salak’s exteriors looks that of a snake’s skin and that is why it is often called as the Snake Skin Fruit, which has a captivating reddish-brown, scaly skin resembling snake scales. The skin is not just for show; it serves as a protective layer for the succulent and sweet flesh within.
This fruit is native to Indonesia and is primarily grown in regions like Java, Sumatra, and Bali. Over the years, it has found its way to other tropical locales, including Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
