Breadfruit plant

Breadfruit plant (Artocarpus altilis) is a species in the jackfruit family. It  is widely found in tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean, Central America and Africa. It’s name is derived from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit when cooked, similar to freshly baked bread with a potato-like flavour.

The fruit is used in cooking various dishes, made into custard or used for pancakes. The fruit is also dried to be cooked later or turned into flour and used like other gluten-free flours, for baking and other recipes.

Breadfruit is high in Vitamin C and A, iron, magnesium and potassium. It has lot of fiber and some protein. It is a low glycemic food compared to foods like rice and potatoes, for which it can be substituted.
